Run down to Kincardine

Saturday, June 30 -- Tobermory to Kincardine (76 miles)

We were underway just before ten for a long boring ride down to Kincardine, which is a bit less than halfway down the Canadian side of Lake Huron. The coast curves eastward and we ran straight for the Kincardine pier once we rounded Cape Hurd. The weather was warm but hazy, with visibility of only a few miles, so we were out of sight of land for over three hours out of the five-and-a-half-hour run.

We called ahead for a dock at the Kincardine Marina, and it's good that we did, as they were full due to the Canada Day weekend crowd. We got a good slip at the end of one of the piers. It's the farthest pier in this photo (which we took from the bridge next to the lighthouse on the way back from dinner).

Given the holiday weekend, Janet also called ahead for a dinner reservation, and landed us a spot at a wonderful foodie place called The Tusk, which overlooked the lake. We had one of our best meals on this trip here. She also called ahead for dock and dinner reservations for tomorrow in Sarnia, which will end our time on Lake Huron.

So, not a lot to report for the day. But we can end with some lighthouse photos, which is always fun. First is the lighthouse at Tobermory, built in 1885, that marks the entrance to Big Tub, and second is the lighthouse for Kincardine harbor, built in 1880, which now serves as part of the range for coming into the harbor.

  1. Good job landing those posh dinner reservations, Mimi! You both deserve a nice meal every once in a while on this trip. A nice change from bar food and fish sandwiches.
