Cape Vincent to Clayton

Sunday, July 23 -- Cape Vincent to Clayton -- 30 miles (with an indirect route)

Set the alarm so we could go to the 8am service at St. John's Episcopal Church. The same rector and organist will then drive fifteen miles to Clayton to do a 9:30 service and then another twelve miles to Alexandria Bay for an 11:15 service. The usher told me that St. John's is the only year-round church; the other two are summer only.

We got underway about 10:15 and decided to take an indirect route to Clayton in order to see some of the famous cottage country of the Thousand Islands. We ran down the St. Lawrence to the east end of Wolfe Island and then turned north into Canadian waters and cruised among the islands south of Gananoque, Ontario admiring the cottages. Our favorites were the ones where the cottage takes up almost the whole island.

The Thousand Islands are reminiscent of the Casco Bay area along the Maine coast. Lots of little islands and boats and cottages; all glacially carved granite; mild summer temps; nice breeze off the water -- but fresh water and no tides or lobster pot floats.

We pulled into the Clayton Municipal Marina about 12:30 and walked into town to find a place for lunch. We ended up DiPrinzio's sitting out along the riverfront enjoying a nice pizza and some wine.

After lunch we walked about half a mile to the Shurfine Supermarket to do some shopping, then hiked back to the boat. John gave her a thorough cleaning while Janet did laundry.

It was almost 8pm by the time we headed into town for dinner (having had a late lunch) where we discovered that the few restaurants that were open on a Sunday evening all closed their kitchens around eight. We ended up eating at the bar at the Thousand Islands Hotel right next to the marina, which was actually quite nice.

  2. That one cottage with the boat garage looks like it ran out of island and started building over the water.
